We all communicate in slightly different ways. At Distinctive Options, we know communication is essential for expressing your thoughts, wants, needs and opinions. We take the time to get to know you and your communication style.
We can also connect with your allied health practitioner to understand how best to support your particular communication style.
We can create communication aids for participants who may be non-verbal or have challenges with verbal communication.
We support the use of Proloquo2go, a popular communication app and use Key Word Sign throughout our day with the use of resources to ensure everyone is signing correctly.
We support individuals to communicate effectively in a manner which best suits them. We will help you develop and implement your individual communication plan. You’ll be able to use suitable communication aids in addition to sensory techniques which will open opportunities like access, meals and other activities to you. You’ll be building your social and interpersonal skills in an environment that is dedicated to your wellbeing.
Obtaining the skills and confidence towards being independent within the community like catching public transport and getting from A-B can be daunting. Where do you begin?
Our team at Distinctive Options will support you with increasing your independence through public transport training by facilitating programs that help you to learn public transports routes and community transport options. You’ll be off and travelling in no time.
Our recreation and leisure programs give you the opportunity to develop recreational interests which can be enjoyed as hobbies, enjoyable activities or meaningful and enjoyable leisure pursuits. You’ll be learning new skills and socialising with others. There are many activities to choose from or you can suggest your own ideas. This can include activities such as community based activities, events, hobbies and crafts and sports.
Do you love animals? With our Animal Planet program you can visit and support other organisations that focus on caring for animals. Whilst networking with the community, you’ll be planning fundraisers. We have connections with Fish care Australia, Wild Action Zoo, DINGO Sanctuary and more.
Develop communication skills while volunteering at your local community radio station in Sunbury or Bendigo. The radio show provides a fantastic opportunity for people to have a voice and a presence in their local community. You may even develop the skills to operate the control panel and conduct interviews with chosen guests. It’s your voice –have a say!
